Finishing tape for tufted rugs

Tufting finishing tape is applied to the back of your rug to cover the edges of the backing fabric and create a neat border.

Made from 100% cotton twill, it is available in black or white to match the finish of your creation.

Apply it after attaching the backing fabric to hide joins and visible edges around the rug.

How do you apply finishing tape?

Once your backing fabric is in place, measure the perimeter of your rug and cut the required length of tape, leaving a little extra for the joins.

Gradually apply hot glue to the area to be covered using a hot glue gun, then position the tape along the edge of your creation.

Work in small sections to keep the tape properly positioned, especially around corners and curves.

How much tape should you allow for?

To work out how much you need, simply calculate the perimeter of your rug, then add a little extra for the joins and corners.

For example, the perimeter of a 60 × 40 cm rectangular rug is 2 metres. Allow a little more than 2 metres of tape to finish it comfortably.

Frequently asked questions

What is tufting finishing tape used for?

It is used to cover the edges of the finishing fabric on the back of the rug, hiding the seams and creating a neater outline.

Where is the finishing tape applied?

It is attached around the back edge of the piece, after the finishing fabric has been put in place.

How do I attach the tape?

You can attach it with a glue gun, working gradually around the edge of the rug to position the tape properly.

Which color should I choose?

The tape is available in black or white. Simply choose the color that best matches your finishing fabric and the look you want on the back of your creation.

How much tape should I order?

Measure the perimeter of your creation and add a little extra for joints and corners. Since the tape is sold by the meter, you can then order the length that matches your project.

What’s the difference compared with double-sided tape for tufting?

The two products are used at different stages. Double-sided tape helps keep the primary fabric folded over during finishing, while this cotton twill tape is used to cover and finish the visible edges on the back of the rug.
