Primary Tufting Fabric with Yellow Lines

This primary tufting fabric provides the base on which you create your design with your tufting gun.

Its double-weave, double-warp structure is designed to withstand repeated needle passes, while its yellow guide lines provide practical reference points for stretching your fabric, positioning your design and finding your way as you tuft. Compatible with Cut Pile and Loop Pile, it’s suitable for beginners and for all kinds of tufting projects.

Why choose this primary fabric?

The yellow guide lines, spaced 5 cm apart, make it easier to check that your fabric is aligned when stretching it over your frame. They also serve as reference points for positioning your design and finding your way as you work, especially when creating lines or geometric shapes.

With its double-weave, double-warp structure and weight of 260 g/m², this fabric is designed for use with a tufting gun.

It’s compatible with our various AK tufting guns and can be used for both Cut Pile and Loop Pile.

Yellow-Line Fabric or Premium Primary Fabric?

Both fabrics are designed for tufting. Your choice mainly depends on the type of fabric you’re looking for.

Feature Yellow-Line Fabric Premium Primary Fabric
Use Primary fabric Primary fabric
Guide lines Every 5 cm Every 50 cm
Cut Pile Yes Yes
Loop Pile Yes Yes
Main advantage Built-in visual reference points More rigid support
Especially suitable for Beginners and everyday projects Large formats and demanding projects

Choose the yellow-line fabric if you’d like to use the visual reference points built directly into the fabric to make it easier to set up and follow your design.

Premium primary fabric is a better choice if you’re looking for firmer support, especially for large formats or more demanding projects.

Stretching your fabric properly before tufting

Proper fabric tension is important for working effectively with your tufting gun.

Gradually secure the fabric to the grippers on your frame, distributing the tension across all sides. The fabric should be taut and remain stable when you apply pressure with your tufting gun.

When should you upgrade to premium fabric?

Once you’ve mastered the basics, our premium primary fabric offers firmer support and a more professional finish - ideal for large formats and demanding projects. To complete your setup, also explore our finishing fabrics for the back of your rug.

We answer your questions.

Frequently asked questions

What is primary backing fabric used for in tufting?

The primary fabric is the canvas that you stretch over your frame and into which the tufting gun inserts the yarn. It is also the fabric on which you can trace your design before you start tufting.

What are the yellow lines for?

The yellow guide lines, spaced 5 cm apart, help you align the fabric on the frame, position your design, and orient yourself while tufting.

What is this fabric made of?

It is made of 65% polyester and 35% cotton, with a weight of 260 g/m².

Is this fabric compatible with Cut Pile and Loop Pile?

Yes. It can be used with both techniques. For Cut Pile, it is compatible with the AK-I CUT, the AK DUO, and the AK-V CUT. For Loop Pile, you can use it with the AK-II LOOP and the AK DUO.

Is this fabric suitable for beginners in tufting?

Yes. Its guide lines are especially useful when you’re just starting out, particularly for stretching the canvas properly, positioning your design, and keeping reference points as you work.

Will the yellow lines be visible on my rug?

No. The primary fabric is on the back of your creation. Once the areas are tufted, the yarn forms the visible surface of the rug.

What is the difference between primary fabric and finishing fabric?

The primary fabric is the canvas into which you tuft directly, while the finishing fabric is added to the back of your creation after tufting to cover and neatly finish the back of the rug.
