Finishing fabric for tufting

Finishing fabric for tufting is attached to the back of your creation once the tufting is complete and the yarn has been secured with glue. Also called secondary fabric or backing, it covers the back of your creation to hide the primary fabric and glue. This gives you a cleaner back and a more polished finish.

This version is made from a cotton-polyester blend with a weight of 250 g/m². It is our standard finishing fabric, suitable for most tufted creations.

The role of finishing fabric in tufting

When you remove your creation from the frame, the back shows the primary fabric, yarn, and glue used to hold it in place. Finishing fabric simply covers this area during the final stages of your project.

Cut it to match the shape of your creation, then attach it to the back with a suitable adhesive. Once in place, it gives you a cleaner result, especially when the back or edges of your creation may be visible.

Attaching finishing fabric to the back of your tufted rug

Start by finishing your tufting and securing the yarn to the back with your tufting glue. Wait until it is sufficiently dry before moving on to the finishing stage.

Then cut your secondary fabric, leaving enough material to properly cover the back of your creation. Position it, adjust it to the shape of your rug, and attach it with a suitable adhesive. Once everything is securely attached, you can trim the excess fabric and finish the edges.

We answer your questions.

Frequently asked questions

What is finishing fabric used for in tufting?

It is used to cover the back of your creation once tufting is complete. In particular, it hides the primary fabric and glue used to make the rug.

Is finishing fabric required?

No. You can make your creation without secondary fabric. It is only used at the end if you want to cover the back and achieve a neater finish.

When should the finishing fabric be applied?

The finishing fabric is applied after you have finished tufting and secured the yarn on the back with glue. Allow your glue to dry before proceeding with the finishing touches.

How do I attach the finishing fabric?

Cut your fabric to the dimensions of your creation, position it on the back, then secure it with a suitable adhesive. You can then adjust the cut and work on the edges.

What is the difference between primary fabric and finishing fabric?

The primary fabric is the one you stretch over your frame and into which the tufting gun inserts the yarn. The backing fabric is applied to the back once your creation is finished. The two fabrics therefore serve different purposes.

Is this fabric non-slip?

No. This is our standard finishing fabric. For a rug placed on the floor, you can choose our non-slip finishing fabric if you want to add grip to the back.

What is the difference compared with the premium finishing fabric?

This version is made from a cotton and polyester blend with a weight of 250 g/m². Our premium version is made from 100% cotton and has a weight of 330 g/m² for a thicker finish.
