Specializing in textiles, sculpture, and drawing, Sebastian draws inspiration from everyday relationships and is guided by emotions. "My work is an exploration of color, form, and imprint, using various materials and processes. It's a way of questioning our relationship to the world of aesthetics, to people, and to objects," he explains. Each piece invites us to dive into a poetic and introspective universe. The soft colors and rich textures offer a unique perspective on objects and their emotions.

Love at first sight for tufting

Sebastian discovered tufting in 2015, while studying Fine Art at Goldsmiths. "I was already making art with knitting and weaving, but I knew I wanted to learn how to create at least one rug before leaving Goldsmiths," he says. Since then, the technique has become central to his art.

These fine and delicate works reflect his current style, both subtle and poetic. "The pieces explore harmonious relationships between shapes and colors, with curves and patterns that evoke dynamics of coming together and separating," he says. This exhibition allowed Sebastian to showcase the full evolution of his art. By blending cultural and aesthetic influences, he creates a unique visual universe.

A meticulous and therapeutic creative process

Sebastian makes each piece entirely by hand, a choice that demonstrates his commitment to craftsmanship. "I like all my pieces to be handmade from start to finish, which is why I continue to do it," he says. While the process is time-consuming, he finds it therapeutic. "My favorite part is seeing the design come to life before my eyes. It's so satisfying and therapeutic," he explains. However, he acknowledges that the final phase, particularly cutting and sewing the edges, can be laborious. Yet, he knows it's essential for a perfect finish.

A colorful and inspiring workshop

Sebastian's studio is a true haven of creativity. Filled with color and carefully curated materials, it inspires. On his shelves, large spools of thread are arranged by shade. This pastel palette perfectly reflects the soft, dreamy aesthetic of his work. This corner is both functional and inspiring. "It's my pastel oasis and creative refuge," he says, describing this space where he spends hours bringing his ideas to life.

A pastel and dreamlike universe with abstract influences

Sebastian draws inspiration from artists like Karla Black , whose abstract approach and ephemeral materials influence his aesthetic. Korean visual culture, particularly its love of pastel colors, is also a source of inspiration. "Pastels evoke a feeling of joy and melancholy for me, creating a peaceful and harmonious atmosphere," he explains. His creations invite the viewer into a soft, dreamy world, where shapes and pastel colors come together to create a unique aesthetic.

Tips for Tufting Beginners

For those interested in getting started with tufting, Sebastian encourages experimentation. "Tufting offers endless possibilities. Have fun and explore!" he advises. He encourages beginners to try different styles and find their own voice in the art.
